FMCG branding agency, The Collaborators, created the Butterworks brand to take Castle Dairies from Welsh treasure to national challenger

True butter virtuosos

Nigel and his team are proud butter manufacturers based in Caerphilly. Passionate to the point of obsession, they are more than experts, they are true butter virtuosos! Their Welsh provenance and treasured status gave their own brand, Castle Dairies, an edge over bigger brands in Wales but was not motivating enough to generate branded sales across the rest of the UK. With ambitions of national retailer listings, Nigel enlisted our help to create a brand that could convert mainstream opportunities beyond their heartland.

“The Butterworks” name was inspired by the experimental HQ where all of Nigel’s better-butter creations are imagined and gave us a joyful Willy Wonka-esque counterpoint to boring global brands. We created a vivid brand world, new packaging for the core ranges and guidelines to help take the brand forwards.

Taking a leap of faith, Nigel asked us to give the already well-established Castle Dairies brand a face-lift too. As a result, the whole family is now more distinctive, memorable and successful! Butterworks opened the door to new sales across the UK (for both brands) and the Castle Dairies redesign has helped the company grow exponentially. It was ranked number 23 in The Grocer's 2021 list of fastest growing food and beverage brands, with a two year CAGR of 23%.
